What Has Whiskey Every Done for You?

I saw an interesting article written in the early century in a newspaper clipping. It talked about whiskey and if it ever did anyone any good. The wisdom from the past is very useful in today’s world. The writer was discussing whiskey. Here’s some of what was said:

Has it ever put a noble thought into your brain or a kindly impulse into your heart? Has it helped give you a start in life or increased your earning? Has it given you a home or made the lives of those, whom you love best any happier? No, whiskey has been your bitterest enemy ever since you got into it’s clutches, and you know it. You are loathe to admit it though. You know how much healthier, how much happier, how much more respected you would be if… Perhaps you belong to the great army of moderate drinkers who are content with a few drinks a day only. You don’t show any effects of your indulgence, but those few drinks that you take daily are slowly underining your constitution; they are ripening the seeds of misery, disease and degradation. They are feeding a lurking demon that may rise up and make you the murder of your own flesh and blood.

Men are pretty nearly alike around the world. Whiskey is the same sort of poison everywhere. It’s mission is to destroy. It’s terrible history is written in the misery and shame and ruin of a hundred generations. That’s what it did to those unfortunate mortal who tampered with it and so sure will it do the same for you. (end of quote)

WOW, that was heavy. What is interesting is that unlike technology such as cell phones, ipods etc, there is a long history about alcohol and intoxication over centuries. This makes the comments of others about this very interesting.
