Dangers of Oxycontin Abuse: Be Careful

oxycontin abuseOxycontin is a prescription analgesic that is prescribed to relieve severe pain. It is considered a Schedule 2 drug and must be prescribed by a doctor in order to obtain it. It has become also something that people use as a high and buy from others or try to fake pain in order to get a prescription from a physician. This is a very bad idea.

Though Oxycontin has been a relief for those that suffer chronic pain, the dangers of Oxycontin are numerous. When Oxycontin is taken it stimulates the pleasurable effectors in the brain that can lead to complete euphoria.

If the time release component of the pill is destroyed a drug user will receive the entire effects of the drug in one shot, which will give the user a feeling of relaxation. The dangers of Oxycontin include side effects such as constipation, slow breathing and drowsiness. Increased tolerance of the drug overtime and the addition of a single large dose can result in respiratory failure that can lead to death.

The dangers of Oxycontin and withdrawal symptoms are similar to heroin withdrawal. The effects are muscle pain, bone pain, acute nausea and severe flu-like symptoms. Continued use of Oxycontin can result in addiction. A person may feel the urge to continue taking Oxycontin and continue the high as a result of chemical changes in the brain. Some people crush Oxycontin tablets and dissolve them with water so that they can inject the Oxycontin. The Oxycontin dangers with this method is that undissolved particles could lodge in a blood vessel and cause blockage or damage of the vessel.

Another danger is contracting HIV, that can lead to AIDS through the use of shared hypodermic needles. Several types of hepatitis which is a contagious liver disease can also be a result of shared needles. Because Oxycontin is a prescription drug, many feel that it is somehow safer for abuse than heroin is. In reality both Oxycontin and Heroin work the same way in a person’s brain. Both substances can lead to withdrawal symptoms and addiction.

Respiratory depression is one of the more serious dangers of Oxycontin, therefore combining Oxycontin with antihistamines, alcohol, barbiturates, or benzodiazepine can be fatal.

The side effects of Oxycontin are sedation, nausea, constipation, vomiting, dizziness, weakness, sweating and dry mouth. Some health conditions can make the dangers of Oxycontin even more fatal and this drug should be discussed with your doctor before consideration. The following conditions should be discussed with your doctor before Oxycontin use: Addison’s disease, hypothyroidism, kidney disease or an enlarged prostrate. Oxycontin should not be taken at all if you have any of the following: severe asthma or an asthma attack, hypercarbia, bowel obstruction or respiratory depression.

People think because their friends or parents have it in the medicine cabinet, it is safe to take as a recreational drug. This is nothing to experiment with. Not only is it highly addictive, but detoxing from it can be quite difficult.
