Effects of Alcoholism-Drinking Effects Oneself and Others
The effects of alcoholism are two-fold. One is the effects on the drinker’s
body, mind and spirit. The second part is the effects of alcoholism on
one’s family and life circumstances. Children of alcoholics have a lot of baggage and this is something to reflect upon seriously if you are a parent.
In terms of one’s body, one can get significant liver and/or kidney damage.
Deficiency in b-vitamins, depression and nervous problems are also common. These may develop gradually so it can go unnoticed until a substantial level of damage has occurred.
Mentally, one often loses ambition and the focus of one’s life’s goals. Getting the relief through the alcohol becomes the main strategy and
this can strain or destroy one’s career and family life. Numbing the
pain is the primary focus and this excludes one’s former enthusiasms.
Since women often have more body fat than men , the alcohol can get into the blood stream in higher levels. Alcohol is broken down by dehyrogenase (enzyme) and this is in lower concentrations for females than males
resulcting in a higher amount of alcohol absorbed.
The effects on families can be devastating. Children of an alcoholic parent
often have low-esteem and a sense of isolation. There can be a tendency
for self-blame as well as fear of falling into the same pattern. A child
or teens social life can be effected due to fear of inviting friends over
and finding an embarrassing situation if there is word slurring or inappropriate behavior of the parent.
The effects of alcoholism are tremendous and can carry from one generation
to the next. A child of an alcoholic can become an enabler or have problems
separating from the parent. In romantic relationships, this can lead to
being in a savior or rescue role resulting in being taken advantage of or
a non-healthy situation of trying to reform the spouse or partner.
