Holistic Approach to Addiction
There are both inpatient and outpatient treatment centers for addiction that have an emphasis on a holistic approach to addiction healing. This can include a number of different modalities. One component is often a solid vitamin, mineral and amino acid supplement program. This is useful for serotonin and the feel good components of the brain. If you are detoxing from alcohol or benzos then there still may be certain medications prescribed for this transition to avoid withdrawal problems.
Some programs will also incorporate a Chinese medicine orientation and this can include acupuncture and herbs. The doctors will have to know if you have been addicted to painkillers such as oxycontin , opiates or alcohol. Honestly is crucial. When the body releases endorphins we feel wonderful. This is also the “runners high” that some refer to.
Psychotherapy with a clinical psychologist or licensed social worker is often part of a holistic program. By finding the roots of the pain, the core unhappiness, one can get in touch with it, face it and drop a lot of baggage. Spiritually, compassion and forgiveness can be very healing though this can be difficult in contexts where there was abuse , neglect or cruelty. Part of therapy often entails looking at one’s own parents’ situations to understand their own pain and how they too may have been victims as well in this cycle.
Tai Chi, hatha yoga, meditation and other practices will help the body relax and to experience levels of peace and serenity without the use of drugs. This teaches someone to not rely on drugs or alcohol for a relief feeling but find it as one’s birthright.
Hi Dee,
Saw some of your articles on ezinearticles and have had a look through your site. Good stuff!
Can I please introduce you to my own article site http://www.holistichealtharticles.com. It’s a new site and is for authors in the holistic/natural medicine and wellness field only.
It would be great if you could post some of your excellent work there and obviously link back to your site. I’m more than happy to add new categories if the current ones are insufficient.
As I said, the site is new, so it can only get bigger and better!
Thanks - Richard
