How to Prevent Relapse: Drug and Alcohol Watchfulness

If you’ve been able to stay clean, sober or drug-free be proud of yourself. You know what it took and you did it. This is a wonderful accomplishment. Try to remember how far you’ve come and how dark it once was to stay motivated. Despite the fact things are good, there needs to be an eye at the back of your head keeping yourself on track when you are faced with challenging situations, social situations that can be tempting or boredom.

This doesn’t mean you are weak or going to fall into it, but life can sneak up on us. Many people find themselves in situations now of mortgage foreclosures, unemployment, higher divorce rates and other pressures. Things come at us from left field. You may hear your mom has a disease, your child was kicked out college or that your job is tenuous.

Here’s some tips to prevent lapse of drug or alcohol habits and tendencies:

1) Limit your exposure to situations where there may be drug or alcohol abuse. Staying away from the old hangouts helps. Be around people with healthy habits.

2) Stay in touch with a therapist, sponsor or support group like na and aa. Regular sessions will help process any stress that arises.

3) Be aware of triggers in past for doing drugs or drinking. You can get urges and cravings so stay on top of it and have alternatives such as music, exercise and ways you can diffuse things. Some people find a cold shower helps. Kundalini yoga recommends a cold shower in the morning.

4) If the cravings are very strong, you can consider seeing your doctor or a psychiatrist to get a medication that may reduce the urges to pick up an alcoholic beverage again or indulge in pot smoking, cocaine or other drugs. There are ssri drugs available but your doctor needs to really know your history and make an informed decision. Be honest with those around you okay? If you really find yourself slipping alcoholic rehab is always an option. It can reinforce lessons you learned and put you firmly back into your resolved state if you lost it.
