Happy Holidays and How To Stay Drug and Alcohol Free

Stop Drinking

Stop Drinking

Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah and enjoy whatever spiritual path you are observing this time of year. First of all congratulate yourself for resisting the temptation for alcohol and drug indulgence that is all around now at friends, family and office parties. You need to be honest with yourself if you can drink in moderation or not. If you doubt that you can do it moderately than don’t use this time of year to test it. With the economy in trouble and other factors, it is too easy to want to forget things and fall into self-oblivion for a while. Don’t kid yourself you’ll only have 1-2 beers if you know historically you haven’t been able to do so.

I was looking at an old book at the bookstore that was written at the turn of the century and the author said some interesting comments about alcoholism saying that people often speak of moderation but just can’t do it. He said a large percentage of people will drink rather than think. If this is you then don’t beat yourself up but just know this about you just like you may be someone who won’t get up early or does Christmas shopping the night of the 24th.

It’s going to be a new year and our determination is strongest now to set up a visualization for a great 2009. Picture who you want to be by end of Dec 2009. Think about the energy you want to have, the clarity of mind, activities you want particpate in. Feel the burden of the past pattern of making excuses, covering things up, lying, being defensive, being in denial about substance abuse or alcohol consumption. Do a visualization where you picture a fork in the road and see the 2 yous- one is where you continue indulging with alcohol, cocaine, mj, multiple wines at night , pain killers etc. The other is where you are on the beach , free of any desperation about getting into a state of self-forgetfulness. It is wonder to not need to numb yourself. You are going to get there in 2009 .
