Inspiration for Resisting Drugs and Alcohol: What Do You Do When You Fall Down

I saw this video and was struck by how this person, born with no arms or legs is able to stay not only in a good mood but actually joyful. I think watching this will help anyone see their own stressors as much smaller. Seeing an inspirational video, reading a book or going to a meeting can really help to change the perspective. When this happens, the cravings stop and even if they return later, you know you were successful at resisting falling off the wagon or back into using and that strengthens you:

He is religious but whether you are spiritual or not, I think you’ll find the video interesting for the way he deals with adversity. I wonder what it must be like for him to hear others’ complaints . He shows what it’s like when he falls down and how it’s hard for him to get up. It is a very interesting talk about what would happen when he falls and doesn’t try to get up and if he doesn’t try but gives up, then what?

Obviously he could just be sitting home feeling sorry for himself. What does this video say to you? How does he go on without drinking or drugging? He says that he would like legs and arms. Nick has a delightful sense of humor. I really him when he says, “Don’t worry, be happy.” . He isn’t a fake. How does he turn his adversity around?

Your life isn’t as limited as his, no matter what your situation is. It may seem like that if you can’t pay the bills or you feel constantly rejected by people. Know that you can get out of it. Remember also that pregnancy and substance abuse are not a good combination. I have seen too many clients who were cocaine-addicted at birth. However, stuck you feel, there is another door than relief through drugs.

  1. I wish I could stop being a pot head and have the calmness he has. He really doesn’t seem depressed for someone with such a disability. I don’t know why I am a pot addict.

  2. I will show this to my friend with alchol addiction so he can see that this guy makes an effort each day. I am not sure why teenage substance abuse is so high but maybe it’s because there aren’t jobs.

  3. I am so inspired by Nicks Attitude and highly recommend watching his videos on “Life Without Limbs” - Very Inspiring!

If you feel that you might be an alcoholic, there is an alcoholism test from Johns Hopkins that you can take at your doctor’s office or online that asks questions about your drinking. While a simple alcoholic quiz can’t diagnose this disease, it can alert you to warning signs. Before you are the guest of honor at an alcoholic intervention, help yourself by going to the doctor, a counselor, a rehab center or a meeting for alcoholics. The first step towards getting help is the most important one you’ll make, from there you will learn to take each day as it comes and find coping strategies to help with alcohol cravings. Whether you decide to go inpatient or outpatient with your treatment it is important to know you can be helped.
