Michael Jackson Drug Addiction: Sadness About Overdose

michael jackson pictureWith the death of Michael Jackson, drug addiction was the first question that was offered be one of the reasons he had died. Just as with Elvis, he had a person who was prescribing medication to him. He had been addicted to different medications, apparently, for many years without the public knowing much about it. There were always rumors, because of his erratic behavior over the years; but nobody could ever know the whole story until he passed.

They’ve developed many different methods of finding whether drugs are in your body. Most of these methods work by searching for components of the drug in the bloodstream, taken from a hair sample, or even from a sample of saliva (depending upon what drug is being looked for).

In the case of the Michael Jackson drug addiction accusation… it was determined in Los Angeles by the County Coroner who found that he had died of a fatal ovedose of a drug called Propofol.

The coroner ruled on August 24th that this is what had caused the death. Apparently, they had been administered by his personal physician, Conrad Murray. There were lethal levels of Propofol in his body. Murray had, apparently, been giving Michael daily doses of the drug. But, that wasn’t the only drug that was in his system. There were also traces of the sedative Lorazepam, the drug Midazolam, and the very powerful drug, Valium.

Murray told the police that he had been giving Jackson IV drips with the drug Propofol in it for about six weeks because Michael had insomnia, and so he couldn’t sleep. The singer died shortly after the four drugs had been administered to Michael.

In Michael Jackson’s trial, it had been brought up many times that he had been addicted to prescription pills, but nobody knew exactly the details. He also had tons of health problems, so it’s hard to determine exactly what it was that was causing Michael’s insomnia problems.

When people find themselves in a situation where they can no longer have normal levels of sleep, they oftentimes get pulled into the whirlpool of addictive drugs. Many drugs which have a sedative quality can be addictive.

Valium used to be the preferred method of sedation for such purposes, years ago… but since then it has lost favor and isn’t oftentimes prescribed for anxiety or depression as it used to be. Lorazepam is a drug of choice in recent years; being prescribed by the millions every year. And, the drug Midazolam is another one that’s overprescribed in this country. Tragically, losing Michael Jackson to an overdose was a true loss of wonderful talent and someone who worked tirelessly and changed popular music forever.

  1. I really miss Michael Jackson. I think his addiction was due to pressure from his dad when he was a kid to always perform and that it probably formed his character. You always got your money’s worth when you bought his music or saw him in concert. But all the performance pressure was killing him too.

  2. People think it’s easy being a performer but it’s not. When he was a child he had to do things so many people didn’t and didn’t get to be carefree like we did.

  3. I didn’t even make the connection between Elvis’s situatio and Michael Jackson’s drug problem till you mentioned it. Two great ones that we lost so young. RIP we miss you so much.
