Negative Effects of Marijuana: Is Pot Smoking Harmless

It’s easy to think that there are no negative effects of marijuana because it’s widely used and turned to as a vehicle for relaxation despite it’s illegality. Pot addiction (marijuana, weeds and others) is considered by many to create no problems for the body. However, this isn’t the case and it can be subtle in how it effects you.

Another thing that people say is that you can stop smoking pot without craving for it. The effect of pot addiction on the user is not so much on the physical side, but more psychological. You can get in the habit of using it to fall asleep and get the mind to stop racing or review the thoughts about the day, a person in your past or job anxiety. The body then gets used to this being a way to tune things out rather then developing a way to process emotions and stay calm in the midst of negative feelings. The real art is to feel the tough situations of life but be able to consciously put them aside and know that they aren’t ultimately gripping.

Memory seems to be one issue that many notice has declined amongst their friends who smoke marijuana frequently. Also due to the deep inhalation in smoking weed, there is evidence of increased carcinogenic hydrocarbons than tobacco . On a short-term level the heart can increase it’s rate for up to 3 hours when you smoke pot.

In terms of withdrawal from smoking pot. This usually manifests in the form of sleep disturbance, irritability, anxiety and anger. The drug also stays in the body of the user for about 30 days.

The best bet is to learn how to process problems and sit with dark emotions so you learn the skills of not freaking out when things are not going your way or are not smooth in life. This makes you a master of situations and not drug-dependent.

  1. It is easy to stay a pothead and not grow up. Most people would rather listen to music, get high and hang out then deal with responsibilities. For me the best home remedy drug detox was to have a kid. Seeing my kid’s smile made me ashamed of my lifestyle.

  2. I have to admit my memory does seem a bit worse due to college days and through my 20s smoking pot a lot. It did get me through hard times but I think there are better methods now instead of using marajuana for stress relief.

  3. Do you think it’s the media that keeps talking about the “negative effects of marijuana” because of wanting to discourage teens and college students from weed smoking and pot? I do think it can be bad if it leads to harder drugs but my boyfriend can only go to sleep just with a little marijuana smoking and he has tried ambien, lunesta and prescription sleeping pills. With pot he wakes up refreshed and gets a good sleep. If sleeping pills make you groggy during the day then what’s the difference? Wouldn’t there be negative effects from pills too, even if they are legal?

  4. Pot smoking seems helpful to reduce anxiety and obviously if there is such a debate about legalizing marijuana it’s because of the fact it helps people so much. I think an addictive personality will smoke pot too much but someone that isn’t will just use it the same way they do everything else. If you are addictive type then you get excessive about things but if you’re not you won’t. That’s my 2 cents.

  5. Is medical marijauna ok short-term? I think it really can help a cousin of mine going through chemo. This is not someone who is a weed smoker, he never even tried a cigarette. But he has been very jittery and marijana could give him peace of mind through this bad period. He has little family and no religion.

  6. It is hilarious that there are intervention sites that address the issue of marijuana addiction when there is an ongoing cigarette addiction epidemic. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard people talk about marijuana addiction while they are smoking a cigarette. It is difficult to think of way to express how silly the campaign against marijuana is. As to the charge that it is “psychologically” addictive, so is sitting in front of the TV and over eating. How healthy are those behaviors? When are we going to start having interventions for obese people? Obesity kills, cigarettes kill, excessive TV kills (indirectly via lack of exercise). Marijuana does not. As to marijuana smoke, this harm can be obviated by using a vaporizer. Get real.

  7. I’ve been a long time pot smoker, and just like all heads i always defended marijuana use, saying it had no negative effects, you could not O.D. on ect.. and until recently that held true. I began feeling a horrible sense of uneasiness far surpassing any paranoia i had felt before, i began having bad panic attacks about 30 minutes after smoking. Now i was having alot of stressful things going on in my life that week it started and i am not blaming it all on weed only that it intensified the strong feelings i was having but ever since that night i’ve been unable to smoke without freaking out when my heart races and so ive been forced to quit. I still believe that marijuana should be legal and at disposal for those who need it but i feel that i abused it for so long that it finally came back on me, moderation is the key. no substance should be abused and i will still smoke to see if the panic will stop because im not afraid of the drug effects only that i will not be able to get control over my anxiety with or without marijuana! just to point out until i stoped i abused marijuana and it should be respected just like any prescription drug!!!

  8. Gerald - no one’s saying those types of behaviors aren’t also harmful. I personally can’t stand cigarettes or smoking of any kind. But the focus here is weed, not eating Doritos in front of the TV. Which is, if you think about it, what potheads do anyway. So there’s a reason not to smoke it.

  9. I want to say that the negative effects of smoking marijuana may not be visible right away but sometimes you can see people having trouble remembering things that are only 20 and the pot really seems to have that problem. It also can make you more paranoid. Of course if you get paranoid from marijuana that is another negative effect too.

  10. All i have to say is that pot..weed.. is fun for about a year and after that, it all starts to tumble down hill. Sure, moderation is the key. i do not blame anyone who takes a puff once, maybe twice a month. act as though it were a treat. not a daily ritual. Its effect on my has caused loss of focus and motivation. I am struggling to get my thoughts straight and yes, i do blame it on marijuana. The Lord wants success for his children; there is happiness in family and things of the sort. Smoking pot is supposed to make you free of worry? happy? high? maybe for 30 minutes, after that your memory decreses and all that scientific jibberish. well, i smoked enough dope in my 16 year old life to realize that i dont need to be toking my life away. all those pilots and doctors and engineers out there making something of themselves look down with pity of us potheads. i dont wanna be called a pothead. so, see ya later zigzag.

God bless yall out there trying to quit. keep it up. you’ll see that the reward is infinate.

  11. I agree w/ JJ. I am currently trying to quit myself. Its been hard, and its more like a daily ritual, than a treat, and as of late that has been bothering me. I am very spiritual, and connected to the lord, and I know of his plans for me. I just have to help him out a lil. he doesnt want me doing this to myself, although when I smoke im at ease, but then it spirals. I cant cant entirely control my thoughts and I am more emotional. I suffer from memory lost, and become lazy. I have trouble getting to sleep and waking up. My body is letting me know its had enough. So I Pray, I can kick this habit.

  12. My sister (age 54) has been smoking pot all her life. She is the only one in the family who has not graduated high school, she does not have a steady job, and she relies on the charity of members of the family when she has financial problems. She has two sons one is in prison and the other quit school over a year ago and does nothing. They were both in gifted programs throughout school but had so many problems that they could notcope with that they dropped out mentally long before they really dropped out. She is far from the vibrant, caring person she used to be when there was hope for her future. She blames everyone for her problems, has difficulty dealing with her emotions and can’t hold a job where she has to think. (She said she likes taking care of the elderly because it’s an “easy gig”). I am so disappointed in her and have decided not to help her any more because I’m just enabling her. Sorry this is so long but I had to get it off of my chest. I too smoked pot during my 20s, however I stopped and got my life together and now have a successful career as an assistant principal.

  13. I smoke marijuana regularly. As I type this, I’m coming to the end of a month-long vacation at home for the holidays. Since being away from home, I’ve gone from smoking bud (and cigarettes), and a little bit of drinking, to nothing at all. Sure I think about smoking, and probably will tomorrow when i get back. I do notice the change in my short-term memory has improved, but other than that, no adverse emotional effects. I’m 28 years old, and have smoked regularly for the past several years. I still enjoy it for many reasons, and I feel that one day I will stop.

In response to JJ, I fully understand your negative feelings towards pot. I personally am not as religious as you, but from what I believe of God, I think he would want us to live happily. “Success” is what you make of it. I’m sure there are “succesful” smokers out there.

Enough about me…the point I’m trying to get across here is that with every human being, there are different tolerance levels, as well as addiction. Marijuana isn’t for everybody, and I don’t advocate it’s use to everyone. I remember a time when i first started smoking weed thinking, “Why doesn’t everyone just smoke a joint, then we’d have world peace overnight.” Over the years (and while still smoking), I realized that there are different kinds of smokers, your habitual user, the medical patient, the stoner, the “once in a blue moon” smoker, and so forth. I also realized that there are people who’ve tried marijuana, and were immediately turned off. For example, some people get the paranoia worse than others. I, personally, can not think of any times that I’ve experienced paranoia as a DIRECT result of smoking pot. Sure, I felt a little paranoid a couple of times when i saw a cop car while driving down the street, but I never have it on me while driving (not smart!)

Does anyone else feel it’s wrong to classify all marijuana users as “potheads”? Maybe its just me, but whenever I see this debate come up, I notice that people who are against marijuana reform/legalization/decriminalization are constantly throwing that term around. Aside from the fact that there are people that do benefit from marijuana OTHER than to “get high”, there are other people who smoke, but not often. Point here, I just think it’s highly unfair to call every marijuana user/supporter a pothead.

I read this article and many others like it because, as a smoker, I want to keep myself educated on its negative effects so that I can truly understand both sides of the arguement. I wish the best of luck to those people who are trying to quit, and fully understand the reasons for doing so. What marijuana does for me, it does something completely different for someone else, and I RESPECT that. Like i said before, marijuana is not for everybody. If you feel that it affects your motivation, memory, motor skills, then put the joint down. Don’t bad-mouth marijuana because something bad happened to you because of it. If you read all of this, I hope i haven’t offended you, and thank you for your time!

  14. So…your sister is a pot head and cant figure out how to get her life together…lets blame the pot…it must be the pots fault…blame your sister for being such an irresponsible person…i smoke pot a lot…i do well in college and a work…you know why? Cause i am a responsible adult who knows when and where to smoke pot so that it doesnt effect my live negatively…stop blaming the pot…blame the person…

  15. I am a member of the national honors society at my high school and i used to be a very good athlete, very healthy and never got sick. I only smoked weed every few months before because my girlfriend hated it. I never experienced negative consequences until i started doing it almost every night. Now i find it much more difficult to focus and make myself do my schoolwork even when i am sober. I also started coughing more and coughing stuff up when i do. Weed hasn’t ruined me by any means but i feel that it easily could if i continue my regular usage. I smoked weed last night and all weekend and i just feel lethargic and not on top of things like i should. I still lift weights and excercise regularly so i don’t feel like it has made me physically lazy but i do feel more lazy about doing my homework. I don’t understand why alcohol is legal if weed isn’t but i now understand the negative effects of regular use. Like many have said before me just now, moderation is key

  16. I’m aware of the fact that this page is dedicated to the negative effects, but there are positive as well. Recently a study was done on the effects of marijuana, more specifically thc, on cancer (primarily of the brain). The findings concluded that thc not only slowed the progression of cancer in most subjects but was also noted to halt or even shrink the cancerous portions of the brain. Also, the majority of the negative effects are centered around smoking the cannabis. I, a user of marijuana, though not while in college due to the fact that it is illegal and hard to hide, choose to vaporize the thc, eliminating the need to “smoke” it. This method is completely harmless as far as the lungs, throat and mouth are concerned, an as for increased heart rate… I run everyday, raising my heart rate well above 50 beats greater than its resting rate. There is absolutely no reason for this substance to be illegal. You can choose to smoke it or not, but it should be just that, a choice

  17. I’m sick of hearing people discuss marijuana as if it brings somebody down or limits their ability to perform. When I smoke I get motivated, I focus better, I do anything and everything I would normally do sober 30% better. Marijuana is to be used to increase ones performance. Of course smoking relaxes one, but allow it to move you. Don’t abuse the drug, be responsible. It just pisses me off how people blaze and act foolish. I would smoke everyday before school and between every period in the bathrooms for 2 years straight… still to this day I haven’t been caught. I got 100’s on my tests and my grades improved dramatically as I was constantly high throughout the day. Learn to smoke, learn to live.

  18. It’s kind of funny for me to hear some people defending pot in terms that if it’s this way for me than it’s that way for you. Pot alters the brain, if you don’t smoke you can probably imagine of course, and if you do smoke you know this is true. So that being said not everyone’s brain works the same right from the get-go. So Cameron maybe you can focus great on pot some people can, and some people can’t, Just like some people can focus better with music, and some people can focus better without…right? And Di-chi, not everyone gets lazy. Sometimes I can clean the F@$% out of my room, kitchen and bathroom, sometimes I can run my little tail off, or get a really good workout in the gym. But you’re right, sometimes I do get lazy and waste the better part of the day. I mean no offense to anyone, but the inexperienced will say it’s all bad, the kids will tell you it’s all good, and the heads will tell you it’s moderation. Thanks for reading.

  19. Funny to hear you say that, but smoking marijuana can be controlled by anyone who desires to control it. You just have to have the mindset for it. Anyone can, but not all are smart enough to figure it out. Don’t blame the pot, you have to blame the user for not using it as a gift and instead as a hinderance… It all depends about your mindset, your mind is so powerful, whether it’s altered or not, it can do anything you want it to. When I first started I was too young to even grasp this concept, but I figured it out.

  20. I have not tried weed yet but I want to just to see what it’s like. I mean I have read all of your comments and how a lot of you are trying to quit but I want to try it for myself even though the media and parents tell you not to. Just to see what all the hype is about and I’m a musician so I want to see the effect it has on my perspective on the music.

  21. I smoked weed for 13 years before quitting, and here’s what I can tell you. When I first started it was just a totally new and fresh experience that I loved, and I saw no ill effects other then coughing and feeling groggy when coming down. Eventually though, my life started to become centered around it, I gradually lost interest in school and my hobbies and became an everyday smoker/pothead. Not until I turned 25 did I realise that I had been living in a fog for many years, and wasting a ton of time and money. Marijuana has medical properties, I won’t deny that, but it can and will drag you down if you smoke it often enough. I was totally addicted to it and quitting was my only option. I feel much more energetic, motivated, and truly alive now than I have in many years.

  22. i smoke weed every day and have for the past 6 years..im a senior in highschool and i got a 3.4 grade point average..my grades have alays been good.. ive had the same job for the last 3 years and i play basketball….when u smoke u have a choice to get motivated an get out and stay with life rather then post up playn videogames eatin..it depends on the person not the drug

  23. I smoke pot every day more than once a day. I have two jobs and I’m a full time student in college doing well in all my classes. O did I mention that I get promoted every time an employee review comes up? The point is, I use weed every day to cope with my heavy work load. Makes me less stressed, more happy, and quite frankly helps me concentrate for I have pretty bad ADHD. So what’s the problem with weed if I can be high all day and still be a functioning member of society? Alcohol is deadly. Not only is it deadly, but I takes a little mis-judgment to drink too much, get alcohol poisoning, and potentially die from one night of binge drinking. Not only that, but drinking alcohol causes you to be in a state of mind where you can’t:
Speak Clearly, Drive, Think clearly, and many other kinds of limitations.

Why is weed illegal if alcohol is not?

You cannot overdose on THC UNLESS you take them in food where the delayed reaction will cause you to eat more and more till, when the high finally does hit you, you can experience some undesirable effects.

Weed is also a very relaxing drug. Most people don’t get high and beat their wives/husbands or children. Alcohol can turn people violent. So many kids with fathers or mothers that treat them to a beating every night with a bottle of vodka in their hand. Weed smokers just want to relax, watch some television, and have a good laugh.

It may seem to many that I enjoy weed very much. This I will admit is true and I will advocate it till the day that I die….or day it gets legalized.

  24. This discussion is obviously biased towards not smoking. I would prefere to read the study of negative effects from a previous pot user, someone who has felt the pro’s and studied the cons. Then tell me if it is worth outlawing vs. alcohol and tobacco. With marijuana you cancel the need for many other medicines. Sleeping pills, pain killers, anti-depressent ect. I think most people usind one of the aforementioned medicines with agree that once you have started one product you find yourself using another to way out the cons of the fist and so on. Until you are using many differant medications for the one problem you had earlier. I know we have all heard, “pot is natural there for better for your body mannnn.” I am not one of those…. pot heads. But I do believe that I would trust what groes in the ground vs. what someone I don’t know and have never met created in a lab. Honestly the only thing wrong with pot is that it is illegal. Other then that it isn’t nearly as harmful as half of the legal “taxable” drugs the government has so graciously allowed us to consume. For the most part the government funds these test I beleive, so ask yourself are they concerned with our safety or there income, please think wisley before you answer that question. Wars are not cheap….

  25. I have been refered to this website by my daughter-in-law. Why? Because she thinks it would help me understand why she doesn’t approve of my son smoking marijuana. (SHE HAS NEVER SMOKED IT, YET SHE WANTS TO GIVE ME ADVICE ABOUT THE USES OF IT).

I am 52 y/o female and smoked it for 19 yrs of the most important yrs of my life, when my children were growing up!! I quit smoking marijuana and drinking with no ones help, 13 yrs ago and never plan to start again. One does not necessarily have to enter a drug rehab or go to counseling to quit. In most cases all it takes is determination, motivation and a reason to quit. It took my first grandchild to make me understand what I was doing to my life. I did not want my grandchildren to grow up seeing me the way my children had to. Life goes on and at some point you have to put the past behind you, accept the fact that you may have screwed up because of it, and start over. I now have problems with shortness of breath, (short) short-term memory loss, and trouble concentrating. There are probably more symptoms but I really dont want to see a dr. to find out. MY daughter, who is 33, to this day still blames me for her problems that she had earlier in her life (teen and early 20s), which I care not to discuss. My son, seems to be turning into his dad, (who still smokes it along with cigarettes and beer, still cant figure out why I divorced him back in 1997 after 19 yrs of marriage, and who now lives like a hermit)!

My son smokes medical marijuana now, to help him sleep. He has trouble sleeping because of Bursitis pain in both hip joints, a deviated septum and abnormally large tonsils, not to mention he probably has sleep apnea. He is afraid to take any kind of pills because he chokes on them and he has had allergic reactions to different pain medications and sleep aids. He does not trust Dr. and thinks that they all believe that a pill will cure anything. (TAKE A PILL…) He needs his deviated septum fixed and his tonsils removed, but he refuses to have it done because of his trust issues. The medical marijuana helps him sleep when he is in pain and he manages to get enough sleep to feel better. These are the reasons my daughter-in-law thinks I need to read this website. She thinks he is addicted to Marijuana. I really don’t think she understood what she was reading though, because I am reading a lot of mixed feeling about marijuana use and most of them seeem to favor marijuana use for medicinal purposes. In my sons case, he has said that it does help relieve his pain, but mostly to help him sleep, but he finds himself smoking it even when he isn’t in pain because he “likes the taste of it”. My comment about this is an analogy of Starbucks coffee and medical marijuana.

I do not drink Starbucks coffee any more because I found it “ADDICTIVE”. When I first started drinking it, I found that by the time I finished the first cup, I wanted another in a few hours. I LOVED THE WAY IT TASTED! It didn’t taste the same as the Folgers or Maxwell House blends. After about a month of drinking Starbucks I found myself drinking 6-8 large cups a day and still wanting more. When I quit, it took me over a week. I started having severe headaches and nausea. No amount of asprin or Tylenol helped get rid of the pain. The only way to relieve the pain was to sleep. As for the nausea, I slept it away. Am I stupid or does this sound like I was having withdrawl symptoms like someone who is addicted to something? Im not sure what is in their coffee, but, I wonder if my Blue Cross/Blue Shield pays for “Coffee Rehab”:) Anyways, I only drink Folgers now, with a 2 cup a day limit!!!!
My sons smoking because he likes the way it taste, is the same thing as my drinking Starbucks coffee.

I approve of medical marijuana, but because they have managed to improve the taste and quality of it, I can understand how this could lead to an addiction. Just like my Starbucks, too much of a goooood think can be bad for you and unless you are close to dieing? anyhow, it shouldn’t be prescribed for just ANY kind of pain, even though it works. I believe that the drs who prescibe it may be going to far in giving it to people who like my son, could benefit more by actually finding the right dr. and getting the right treatment.

  26. Blaze ( my real name ) on April 27th, 2010 at 6:38 pm

The conversation is obviously about not smoking weed, but i would also like to introduce the cancer patients and all the other people who actually need the “substance” to relieve pain or anxiety. One thing i think people should understand about Marijuana is that it effects everyone differently. One of your friends might tell you a story where he is just freaking out, the other might tell you it just relax’s him and puts him in a different state of mind. One thing I hate most about this conversation is that people who have never tried it are talking bad about it. If nothing have fully been proven or is a ” Fact of Marijuana ” dont talk bad about it. Another topic, Which one is worst a “Alcoholic or Pothead” one might beat thier wife the other might just sit around and eat all day. One might get into a car crash and kill who knows 2-4 people? the other look into blank space. Now im not saying that a pothead couldnt do the same, but if you use marijuana in a safe environment with no car keys and you just sit around with your friends, OBVIOUSLY nothing or nobody is going to get killed.

  27. People keep talking about their loss of concentration and motivation due to smoking pot. I find that weed is simply this. an enhancer. It will enhance what kind of person you naturally are, whether you’re a clean freak or a religiously studious person. Lazy people and slow thinkers will get lazier and slower. I’ve been smoking every day for a while now and find that because i’m a naturally ocd person i tend to go on cleaning sprees, even going so far as to clean my friend’s dirty apartment. I also study hard because i realize the importance more while i’m high and don’t put it off like i would if i were sober.a few things are lost to me as far as memory goes, but the same goes for when i’m sober, and can usually vividly remember a night of heavy toking. it’s also not addictive,(except for obviously for the love of the experience) an unlike most drugs(and alcohol which is very much legal) it allows you to still be a functioning member of society. pot smoking is all about self control and knowing how you are. and for most people should be used in moderation.

  28. People keep talking about their loss of concentration and motivation due to smoking pot. I find that weed is simply this. an enhancer. 29. I don’t like to sit here and read all these people telling us how their friend, mother, brother, sister, ect.. has become a complete bum from smoking. There are some who have legitimate reasons for smoking and not smoking. I personally love it and haven’t seen an impact on my grades or overall life at all. Of course I’ve only been smoking 2 years but i figure that if its going to have affects on me then they would have already been starting to show at least. Sure if you let it control you then most people are right. You will be f*%$@# in life, but being able to take a step back every once in a while to take care of whats really important (friends, family, school, work, ect..) is what separates the responsible from the stupid.

  30. I have been smoking weed pretty much daily for close to 3 years now. I was completely clean for about 9 months then started smoking again here recently. I know a lot of you people out there have been talking about how smoking weed will make you lazy, unmotivated, fat, etc. but for me it does the exact opposite. Everyday when I get up I need to smoke a joint or else it’s harder for me to get going. It helps me eat throughout the day, sleep at night, and comes in handy when mother nature comes every month with those wonderful cramps! It also helps me think clearer and stay in a happy carefree mood. I know for many people out there it can and will lead to harder drugs but not everyone. I have no want to do anything else at all, not even drink, let alone bang heroin or smoke a foil. I think people need to stop giving into society and being judgemental about this subject. There are people out there who benefit from it. There’s no reason you can’t be successful and like to smoke some weed here in there. I just think before you talk bad about it, or people who smoke it, you should really have some experiences with it.

  31. Listen i have only smoked pot once and in that time i got hit by a car that stuff makes you a complete retard and that is the main reason it is illegal if they are to legalize it there should be at least some age boundries so at least you have some wisdom right?

  32. I’m 27 now and smoked pot daily for the past 12 years. I have been sober for 5 months and have vowed to never smoke again. I started out as a very bright young kid, graduating high school at 14, going to college, getting a 60k/yr job at 16… But then I found pot and always had the money to keep my addiction fed. My ability to work at home caused me to smoke it morning, noon and night. The past 12 years of my life have been a blur. It shames me to think that I am now 27, unemployed and no longer in possession of the mental ability to perform the computer programming work I’ve been doing my entire life. I have falled into a very deep depression and find myself constantly considering suicide since I feel like it’s all uphill from here. While I’d like to put the entire blame of situation on pot, I know that it is really my lazy and naive character to blame for my lack of enthusiasm and hope. However, I can’t help but feel like there is still this fog lingering in my brain that prevents me from thinking as clearly and sharply as I used to. And although I’m sure the 12 years of aging may have something to do with it, I honestly believe it is the pot, more than anything, that has really made me “stupid”. So while pot may affect everyone differently, I believe that nobody is immune to the negative and detrimental outcome it can have on your brain after repeated and prolonged use. I highly recommend you stay away from it, for good.

  33. i think there is nothing wrong with a little marijuana smoking, sure it causes reckless behavior and stupidity, but if it really makes you happy, then do it. there are negative effects because it is a drug for a reason, but i don’t see the point in adults trying to stop kids from doing it… not matter how bad they make it seem, kids are gonna do what they wanna do and what parents say goes through one ear and out the other. it’s definitely better than drinking alcohol and smoking cigarettes, i’d feel more comfortable if i knew my kids were in our basement smoking pot then not knowing where they are and if they’re okay, i’m totally okay with marijuana and i think it should be legalized. it would not only redice crime, it would definitely help get us outta debt.. but that’s just my opinion. i love marijuana =)

  34. I’ve been smoking pot for medical reasons and lately it kind of make me angry all the time and paranoid (like everybody know I smoke). Can somebody outthere help me with this issue?
    Thanks

  35. I’ve been smoking marijuana daily (sometimes multiple times) for the past 8 or 9 months. The key is moderation, which I did not take into consideration. I had never tried mary j until 9 months ago. And I got hooked. I loved the way marijuana made me feel.. So free, everything was enhanced and better. Food was omg, 100 times better. So all in all I smoked a lot. However, as it’s been mentioned, marijuana effects everyone differently. I wanted to be smart about my pot smoking, so I started to educate myself on the “negative” effects. I would go to countless websites and research everything there was to know about mj. I wanted to know what I was doing to my body.

People make the argument that weed makes you lose motivation, lethargic, memory problems, etc. However this wasn’t the case for me. Sure occasionally I would rather veg out and watch tv when I was high than study, but i quickly realized that’s not what I should be doing.

The people who smoke marijuana and lack motivation were already unmotivated. People need to stop blaming the pot for their laziness. If you want to go get a job, spend time with your family, etc then get your lazy *** up and do just that. The weed isn’t making you not get up and going with your life- it’s you! Marijuana is NOT addictive. I’ve taken many breaks over the course of my smoking months and have experienced little withdrawl symptoms.. Just hard to go to sleep and loss of appetite. Which lasted only about a week.

So overall… Just be smart with your pot smoking. It’s meant to enhance your life.. Not be your life.

  36. hey people, ive read all these comments, and frankly, it depends on YOU. YOU control it, it DOES NOT control YOU. i noticed that with me, it messed my short term memory. thats the only negative effect on ME. i smoke it once every 3 weeks or so, but it messed my memory when i smoked it last week non stop. so what am i trying to say? dont abuse it, and its not a gift, its a substance that should be used like twice a month, not every day… by the way im 15 and the first i tried it, was in january of ‘10.iknow it hasnt been a long time but i feel likeits been forever. so just smoke it on special occasions or so, dont do it everyday. thanks

  37. I hear a lot from both sides of this arguement. There are good pionts and ill informed points. My perspective is that marijuana is not as bad as most people think and that they can say this or that about the topic but the truth is legalizing marijuana would be beneficial to our economy and society. More so than alcohol and cigarettes. The side effects of alcohol and cigarettes (dizziness, vomiting, acting invincible, being overly confident, overdose, car accidents, child abuse, violent behavior, youth athsma, irritability, and many health problems), are way more frightening than marijuana’s side effects. The obvious truth is that this plan, that God placed on this earth, will actually do more good to humanity than the legal drugs that are being sold to the masses now. There haven’t even been any recorded deaths due to marijuana and it has been proven to help grow brain cells (even though the thought process shows otherwise) and one does not even have to smoke it to feel the effects. A person can eat, drink, and inhale vaporized marijuana fumes which is healthier than inhaling the burning plant fumes. This “drug” is far superior than alcohol and cigarettes without violent outbreaks and a slow cancerous death, yet it is placed on the same level as heroin and cocain. That is just wrong. Marijuana does effect everyone differently but it should be the peoples choice whether or not to use it, just like alcohol.

  38. Anybody who would deny that pot has any negative effects is obviously in denial and is wrong. It does. But it does have positive effects as well (relaxing, makes many things more enjoyable, it can enhance creativity, it can make some people more energetic [i like working out when I'm high sometimes], and it can help people get a better night’s sleep)
And this makes it just like anything else… everything has pros and cons. I believe it should be left up to people to decide for themselves what they want to put in their body, and I think it’s self-righteous and overly-judgmental to think poorly of anyone who would decide to use pot because they find the pros outweigh the cons.

I don’t smoke pot all that regularly. I do it when I can. When I can afford it and when I have leisure time. I’d say I smoke it on average about 10 to 15 days a month or so. And its usually just at night.

I like writing screenplays, and I find that some of my best ideas have come to me when I’m high. I’ve even written entire scenes while on pot (usually require some editing when i’m sober, but they’re usually good scenes).

I don’t do big doses. Usually one joint or just a couple of bowls, and I don’t take huge tokes. I don’t like burning my lungs, so I keep it in moderation.

I’ve been smoking like this for about a year now, and I’d smoked occasionally before that. When I first started more heavily, I noticed a drop in my concentration levels, but that only lasted a week or two. Since then, my concentration has been fine.
Obviously if you smoke large amounts in shorter time periods, it’s gonna compound the effects. And that’s just something people have to control themselves.

The reason marijuana is defended by those who smoke it as not being all that harmful is because it really isn’t, speaking relatively. For being such an enjoyable drug to use, the negative effects are really quite minor compared to other drugs, and even compared to alcohol. Marijuana does not get in the way of your life. You won’t steal from your friends to get pot money (unless you’re of poor moral character to begin with). You won’t wear away your body because of pot. You won’t forget your goals.
Pot doesn’t change who you are like actual harmful drugs.

We’re talking minor things like possible increased risk of heart attack and lung cancer, which, if you use pot in moderation, is not a huge increase. This is incredibly minor compared to other illegal drugs. And it’s nothing that cigarettes don’t also cause.
Decrease in concentration and memory… again, minor. Usually not very severe, and again, if used in moderation, we’re not talking huge decreases here. This isn’t something people should be considering a crime.

If you live an otherwise healthy lifestyle, then smoking pot will not cause huge problems. It’s relatively easy to do in moderation, because it is very unaddictive compared to cigarettes or other illegal drugs. Yes, you CAN get addicted to it mentally, but nobody would ever keep doing pot if it caused huge problems in their life. It’s easy to quit if you want to.

It’s a relatively safe drug. Just because people say it’s not bad, they’re not saying it doesn’t have any negative effects. They just mean that it’s relatively very safe as far as intoxicants go.

There are much more important things to worry about in this world. I don’t think it’s worth it for the police to have to worry about marijuana. It should be legal, just treated the same way that cigarettes and alcohol are. Don’t do it in public and not under a certain age.

  39. I personally have bad side effects from marijuana.I would often feel nauseous and light-headed after using it.I’m not against marijuana. I think that if it is used for the right purposes such as stress/anxiety relief or a sleep aid then it’s fine, just like prescription drugs are used.Prescription drugs have benefits and bad side effects just like pot. If someone decides to smoke pot then they have to weigh the pros and cons.I disagree with people abusing it, like ignorant teenagers who smoke it just to “fit in” or cover up their problems. There are other healthy ways to cope with life’s problems. For the people who smoke it everyday, all I have to say is good luck in the future. The long-term effects on the body are horrible.

I also want to say that as a person who suffers from anxiety/panic attacks,I take a low-dose of Ativan only when needed. There are natural herbs that can be used to treat anxiety such as Kava, passion flower and valerian root as well. Also St.John’s Wort is a natural mood enhancer. So people need to realize that marijuana is not the only natural herb out there. It is most definitely not the safest herb either.
