We regularly read about celebrities and drug addiction issues. Lately, there have been a lot of news stories involving prescription overdoses and abuse. Some have led to death including sadly Corey Haim, Heath Ledger and of course Anna Nichol Smith. In the news today I see Jeremy London has been mentioned for getting help for his addiction to prescribed meds. Fortunately, it looks like he is going to truly make changes in his life. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, also known as PSTD, is a scary illness for those who have it as well as for those who watch their loved one suffer with it. It is the result of mental damage after experience a distressing event. The severe anxiety that comes with the disorder is only one part of it. The phyiscal side affects are also life altering. Under the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 or FMLA, an employee can be granted up to 12 weeks of unpaid or paid leave in a period of 12 months. The reasons include adoption, child birth, care of an immediate family member for a serious illness or a serious health condition of the employee, which prohibits them from working. In order for an employee qualify for the leave they must have worked for at least 1250 hours over the past 12 months, and work within 75 miles from their company which employees more than 50 people. For military service members a leave of 26 days is provided for those who are seriously sick or injured. This rule was updated in 2009. For most of the population, using drugs is a scary prospect. For addicts it is more terrifying to NOT take the drug. This is because withdrawal from drug addiction can be severe. People use drugs for a variety of reasons, to escape stressful situations, home or work problems, or even just for “fun.” As the person uses the drug they build up a tolerance leading them to use more in a never ending cycle.
