Poems About Drug Addiction

poems about drug addictionWhen an individual begins to abuse drugs, it makes everyone in the family tense, sad and frustrated. Depending on the intensity of the addiction, they may begin to steal or borrow money from the family and begin to act strange, or paranoid. Their only concern is how to get his next fix. There may be conflicts in the family about how to treat this drug abuser. Some may continue to support them while others may treat them with tough love. It is hard to know what to do, and devastating to see someone you love become a slave to a drug dependency.

Many recovering abusers and family members need ways to cope with the effects of drugs. Some people write poems about drug addiction. These poems help people get their emotions, pains, and opinions out on paper. It’s a great way to express themselves even if they have no one to confide in. Many people view drug abuse and addiction as only a social problem. Parents, spouses, and other members of the community often characterize people who take drugs as morally weak or as criminal delinquents. They believe that drug abusers and addicts should be able to stop using these substances if they are willing. Desiree Kimbrue wrote a poem about her mother’s cocaine addiction, she wrote, “I make people cry, I make people shout, try me twice and you’ll never get out.” She knew how hard it was for her mother to stop using this destructive drug.

Poems about drug addiction can help individuals cope with not only their drug addiction, but also what causes them to submit to doing drugs in the first place. We understand that at some point, a change happens in the brain that turns a drug user into addict. As a result, those addicted to drugs suffer from drug cravings can’t always quit on their own. Treatment is necessary to end this compulsive behavior. However, creative writing such as poems about drug addiction and personal journals can give the addict the spiritual expression they so desperately need. This can lead to a light bulb moment of insight or an epiphany. It’s also therapeutic for family members to write.

  1. My friend’s sister starting writing poetry when she stopped using cocaine and this calmed her down and helped her figure out why she used it. I think combined with counseling it can be a way someone can help themselves. Some poems though are really depressing by addicts and shows a sense of horrible hopelessness of stopping adiction habits.

  2. When my brother was in recovery he read drug addiction poetry and did some writing himself. It got him to see that he’s been depressed since he was 12 and has a dual diagnosis. Drawing was also therapeutic for him.
