Teen Drinking: Do You Know About Alcopops
A study by NSW in Australia found that teens are spending thirty dollars a week on alcohol. At the University of Wollongong , Professor Jones studied 1263 answers from teens aged between 12-17 years in her research study. Ninety percent indicated they had consumed alcohol.
They are talking about alcopops which have fruit or malt flavoring to mask the taste of the alcohol. In the US the stats of teens drinking alcopops is also high.
This is a concern for many now saying that these ready to drink beverages are getting a lot of exposure in advertising and are innocently consumed but 12 ounces of alcopop has 5 to 7 percent alcohol content just like a 12 ounce beer. Because they taste sweet, there isn’t enough public awareness of the danger and that this can be a segway to more serious drinking down the road.
Though they may be called girlie drinks, nonetheless, they are alcohol and the AMA is getting concerned. The typical age for trying this for the first time is age 13 and with commercials the exposure about this is growing.
