Teens and Alcohol- Warning Signs and Dealing with Dances

Drinking is something that high school teenagers often experiment with through parties, dances and gatherings. Teens and alcohol is a bad combination due to not only legalities, but the fact that teenagers are often inexperienced drivers, already feel pressured in social situations in terms often due to  trying to fit in and dealing with hormonal changes.

This can lead to sexual activity without protection or intimacy in an underage situation. Dances and proms and even ironically the drug education programs in high schools are often the settings for drinking and drug use.

Some situations may have built up due to just drinking a beer here or there previously. Try to keep your communication with your teen ongoing. Take time to take him or her out to get ice cream or pick up an electronic gadget together. Use this time to talk about possible life stressors and find out his or her concerns. Share your own experiences in high school or college about your uncertainties and vulnerabilities so that you aren’t seen as a martian.

If you notice that your teen has less motivation, has grades that have dropped significantly or seems to be secretive and furtive, try to break through his or her wall and get him to open up. If this seems really tough due to having a strained relationship , an older sibling or the “cool” uncle in the family could be a good person to have a heart to heart conversation.

Teen years are difficult and not as carefree as we like to think. There are pressures about college applications, popularity and big life questions that make this transitional period difficult and outlets like beer, drugs or internet addiction are temptations.
