What Have You Lost Due to Addiction
I was listening to the song “Out of my Life” by Michael Jackson and it really seemed to speak to what is lost due to having other priorities. I know the song isn’t about addiction but the lyrics are really incredible. In his autobiography Moondance, he says that he interpretted this song to be about barriers that separate him from a lot of people, and what he desires gets away from him because of these barriers.
The line, “Damn indecision, and cursed pride. I kept my love for her deep inside. And it cuts like a knife ” speaks to us all. There are a few ways to look at this in terms of addiction issues:
1) Are you hurting from a loss like this. Is there something inside you that cuts like a knife and this is where drinking or drugs come in?
2) Do you find that it’s because of doing drugs or getting intoxicated that you are losing what you love the most? Are things slipping away? What is disappearing? Does it have to disappear or can you stop your walls and barriers, show love , show anger show your emotions?
Music can be carthartic. It reaches deep in the soul. See how this song speaks to you. Open your heart again. Don’t numb it.
